about the artist
Alex Johnson
I am a third generation visual artist from North Phlly, following in the footsteps of my mother who is a sculptor and my granny who was a painter. I first learned to draw at the age of nine when my older brother Chris, who also inherited our family’s artistic legacy, taught me. My work focuses on realistic portraiture & figurative paintings, using acrylics and mixed media. I also paint abstract works, which are about capturing chaos. My abstract work contrasts sharply with the clean freehand realism of my portraits, and I am working to integrate the two together in a blend that creates my own unique style. I am also seeking opportunities to further develop my tattoo skills through an apprenticeship.
I was originally trained as an illustrator, graduating in 2006 from Moore College of Art & Design in Philaephia, with a B.F.A. in Illustration. Illustrators tell stories through art alongside text. This is the root of meaning behind my pseudonym, Lexiconz. Lex; a nickname for Alex, Icon; representing visual symbols that convey meaning to the viewer, and Lexiconz: using words to communicate experiences, which I also do through poetry.
My work is deeply inspired by the rebellious nature of graffitti art, along with the vibrancy of colors and movement within its composition. I am also inspired by the visual storytelling in Frida Kahlo’s work, and Georgia O'Keefe’s approach to rendering intimate details of nature through close-up views. I am fascinated by the interplay between natural lighting and paint, and my goal is to create visual effects that make my work come to life in ambient sunlight through to the low light of dusk. I am moved to create art that reflects the beauty I see in the world.
